Lent is a season of preparation for Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday, the day after Mardi Gras. During this season, it is traditional for people to give something up, typically chocolate, sweets, or other foodstuffs. At some churches, the word “alleluia” is not used from the beginning of Lent until Easter Sunday morning.

The goal of the Lent period is to prepare your self for Easter. It is like a spring cleaning for your soul. During Lent, we encourage you to make an extra effort to incorporate prayer and Bible reading into your regular schedule. The Gospels of John and Mark are especially good reading.

Here are some suggestions for how you can celebrate Lent this year:

Fast from a certain food

Fast from a certain vice or weakness: cursing, yelling at people, smoking, skipping meals, overeating, etc.

Fast from a certain activity: TV, Internet, video games, college basketball

These are all sacrificial expressions. It’s important to remember to fill the freed space with positive items. Here are some suggestions.

Read a chapter of the Bible each day

Give away $10 a week to God’s work

Pray with your family members

Sit and listen to special music

Walk the prayer labyrinth at Millbrook Baptist Church

Here are some websites with more information about Lent:
